Why We Call People Chicken

Chickens

A bunch of chickens...

Chicks at the door.

Chicks at the door.

This isn’t a scientific study, just some chicken coop observation. My chickens are a bunch of chickens. We got them when they were about a week and a half old, some New Hampshire, some Rhode Island, a couple of Ameraucanas and a White Leghorn rooster. After building the whole chicken coop and run, my husband still had to construct a box, with a light bulb to keep them warm and cozy for a little while longer. Then he said he was done. So it was my turn, to do something other than talk and write and read about chickens. First things first, keep things clean. That brings to mind another chicken expression that I won’t repeat here. I’m a Chicken Keeping Virgin

We’ve been talking about keeping chickens since we moved to Greenville, back to Greenville in my husband’s case, about four years ago. But I really don’t know much about keeping chickens. I started reading a few books a few years ago, and I surfed around the internet a bit, to learn what I can. But I know that if I haven’t done it before then I really don’t know anything. Practical experience is what I lack. My husband remembers his Big Daddy’s chicken coop, and he’s been “talking to people” who know something.

One thing I keep hearing from folks around our neighborhood is “we used to have chickens but” after which they will lament their loss to a coyote or weasel. There are also foxes, raccoons, possibly bobcats, not to mention our own two cats, three dogs, and the red tail hawks nesting overhead. With all that to think about, this won’t be a free relationship. We don’t need a chicken shack; we need a chicken fortress. Continue reading

Spring Flowers

Count me among the millions who can’t resist the sight of a beautiful flower. Food comes from flowers, reason enough to love them. It is no superficial relationship that we have with these beauties. But beauty helps doesn’t it? Food for the eyes is nourishment for the Soul.

The speed of spring is overwhelming. One day the trees still look grey and drab. The next day there are hints of red and yellow and green. Then all of a sudden the trees are blocking my view of the neighbors, dogwoods are blooming, and I didn’t, or couldn’t, observe it all happening. Buds and shoots appear all around. Patches of grass go from brown to green. Asparagus and stevia and mint reappear like magic from the ground. It’s almost impossible to keep track of, but the flowers really steel the show, tantalizing us with the hope, (never really a promise,) of cherries and strawberries, blueberries, nectarines and artichokes. A Unique Gem in Greenville

When I’m driving around town I turn on an AM Radio and listen to non-stop music in stereo, interrupted only by brief station id’s every twenty minutes or so. Sound like a dream? Not if you live in Greenville, South Carolina. I listen to WPCI Greenville, 1490 AM. The station ID calls itself quality radio, and I have to agree.

You won’t hear Classical music, or I haven’t heard any yet, anyway. But if you like Classical music, you can find plenty of it on South Carolina’s self-proclaimed classical station WETV. You won’t hear what I refer to as Pop Schlock, but you can find plenty of that elsewhere.

What I have heard for the last couple of months that I have been listening, I would describe overall as American music. There are exceptions. Maybe music of the Americas would be a better description, with a little Reggae thrown in. I have heard Blues, Jazz, Latin Jazz, Country, Folk, Zydeco, Rock, Beach and more. What I have not heard yet is a repeat of a song. Continue reading

How to Be Self-Sufficient

Why till instead of pay a grocery bill? I had a neighbor in California who laughed at my gardening efforts from the other side of his fence. He used to say “I just go to the grocery store for that stuff”. He preferred to grow exotic flowers. Other people prefer computers to hoes, fast food to slow food, airplane aisles and the latest styles to eating greens and picking green beans. Personally, I prefer a garden hose to panty hose, and my own vacation playground year round. I like to be part of a general effort to make or keep my environment beautiful and productive, not just take pictures or wish I was there.

Barley Soup Therapy

Today I was frustrated with slow Internet and out of date computers. It was raining, so I took my frustrations out in the kitchen instead of the garden. Every time I found myself staring at an unmoving screen, I got up and added something to my soup. I started with the onions I pulled up from the garden yesterday. They were kind of tough, so I put them in my soup pot with some old carrots and celery and garlic laying around my kitchen. I boiled that for a couple hours. Continue reading
